Blind XXE in Apache Jackrabbit privilege loading

IdentifiersCVE-2025-53689CWE-611· Improper Restriction of XML…

CVE-2025-53689 is a blind XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability affecting Apache Jackrabbit components jackrabbit-spi-commons and jackrabbit-core before the fixed releases. The issue is caused by use of an unsecured XML document builder when loading privileges, allowing external entity resolution during XML parsing. The available content specifically describes the flaw as occurring in the privilege-loading code path and characterizes it as a blind XXE, indicating exploitation may rely on out-of-band interactions rather than direct in-band disclosure. Affected versions are Apache Jackrabbit versions prior to 2.20.17 on the Java 8 line, prior to 2.22.1 on the Java 11 line, and prior to 2.23.2 on the Java 11 beta line.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can allow an attacker to trigger blind XXE behavior, including out-of-band network interactions from the vulnerable system to attacker-controlled infrastructure. Depending on runtime parser behavior, reachable internal services, and surrounding application configuration, this may enable disclosure of sensitive data, access to internal network resources, or SSRF-like effects via XML external entity resolution. Because the issue is described as blind XXE, direct response-based exfiltration may not be necessary for exploitation.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, prevent untrusted XML from reaching the affected privilege-loading functionality. Enforce secure XML parser settings wherever possible, including disabling DTD processing, external entity resolution, and external schema/resource access. Apply outbound network egress restrictions to reduce the effectiveness of blind XXE callbacks and monitor for anomalous parser-initiated outbound requests.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Apache Jackrabbit to a fixed version. The provided remediation guidance recommends upgrading to 2.20.17 for the Java 8 branch, 2.22.1 for the Java 11 branch, or 2.23.2 for the Java 11 beta branch. Earlier versions up to 2.20.16 are no longer supported and should be migrated to a supported fixed release.
