Plaintext Password Storage in Rockwell Automation ISaGRAF Runtime

IdentifiersCVE-2020-25184CWE-256· Plaintext Storage of a Password

Rockwell Automation ISaGRAF Runtime versions 4.x and 5.x store user passwords in plaintext within a file located in the same directory as the executable. The runtime reads this file and loads the password data into a variable without any form of encryption or obfuscation. This design flaw allows local, unauthenticated attackers to access and compromise user passwords by simply reading the file, leading to information disclosure.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

An attacker with local access to the system can obtain user passwords in plaintext, potentially leading to unauthorized access to the ISaGRAF Runtime environment and any connected systems or processes. This can result in further compromise of industrial control systems and sensitive operational data.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict local access to the system running ISaGRAF Runtime, ensure proper file system permissions to prevent unauthorized users from reading files in the executable directory, and monitor for unauthorized access attempts. Consider using additional host-based security controls to limit exposure until a patch is applied.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to a version of ISaGRAF Runtime that addresses this vulnerability by implementing secure password storage mechanisms, such as hashing and salting. If an upgrade is not available, contact Rockwell Automation for guidance or patches.
