Unauthenticated Arbitrary File Upload in Kaswara Modern VC Addons WordPress Plugin

IdentifiersCVE-2021-24284CWE-434· Unrestricted Upload of File with…

The Kaswara Modern VC Addons WordPress plugin through version 3.0.1 contains a vulnerability in the 'uploadFontIcon' AJAX action, which allows unauthenticated users to upload arbitrary files, including malicious PHP scripts, to the wp-content/uploads/kaswara/fonts_icon directory. The plugin fails to perform proper validation or sanitization of uploaded files, nor does it restrict the file types, enabling attackers to upload and execute arbitrary code on the server.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows remote, unauthenticated attackers to upload and execute arbitrary code on the affected WordPress server, leading to full compromise of the site, data theft, webshell deployment, and potential lateral movement within the hosting environment.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict access to the wp-content/uploads/kaswara/fonts_icon directory via web server configuration to prevent execution of uploaded PHP files. Employ a web application firewall (WAF) to block suspicious file upload attempts. Regularly monitor and audit file uploads and server logs for anomalous activity.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade the Kaswara Modern VC Addons plugin to a version that addresses this vulnerability. If no patched version is available, disable or remove the plugin from the WordPress installation. Additionally, remove any unauthorized files from the wp-content/uploads/kaswara/fonts_icon directory and review server logs for signs of exploitation.
