Reflected XSS in changedetection.io notification_urls parameter

IdentifiersCVE-2024-34061CWE-79· Improper Neutralization of Input…

A reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in changedetection.io prior to version 0.45.22. The vulnerability is due to improper handling of user input in the notification_urls parameter, which is not sanitized or processed correctly, allowing for arbitrary JavaScript execution when the input is reflected in the application's response.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the victim's browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or other client-side attacks.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No official workarounds are available. As a temporary measure, restrict access to the application to trusted users and consider deploying a web application firewall (WAF) with XSS filtering until the application can be upgraded.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade changedetection.io to version 0.45.22 or later, where the input handling for notification_urls has been properly addressed.
