XXE in Apache Drill XML Format Plugin

IdentifiersCVE-2023-48362CWE-611· Improper Restriction of XML…

An XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability exists in the XML Format Plugin of Apache Drill versions 1.19.0 and later. This flaw allows an attacker to supply a malicious XML file that can trigger the application to read arbitrary files from the remote file system or execute arbitrary commands, depending on the XML parser's configuration and the system environment.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to disclosure of sensitive files from the server's file system or remote code execution, depending on the attacker's crafted XML payload and the system's configuration. This can result in significant compromise of confidentiality and potentially integrity and availability of the affected system.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable the XML Format Plugin or restrict its usage. Additionally, configure the XML parser to disallow external entity resolution and DTD processing to mitigate XXE risks.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Apache Drill to version 1.21.2 or later, where the vulnerability has been addressed and the XML parser is properly configured to prevent XXE attacks.
