Cisco Secure Firewall ASA/FTD IKEv2 IPsec GCM Traffic Denial of Service

IdentifiersCVE-2026-20049CWE-131· Incorrect Calculation of Buffer Size

CVE-2026-20049 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in Cisco Secure Firewall Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense (FTD) Software affecting processing of Galois/Counter Mode (GCM)-encrypted IKEv2 IPsec traffic. The issue is caused by allocation of an insufficiently sized block of memory during handling of this traffic. A remote attacker with valid VPN credentials can exploit the flaw by establishing a VPN connection to the affected device and sending crafted GCM-encrypted IPsec traffic. Successful exploitation can trigger an unexpected device reload.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation causes the affected ASA or FTD device to unexpectedly reload, producing a denial-of-service condition. This can interrupt VPN connectivity and firewall services handled by the device until it recovers.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

No specific workaround or mitigation is provided in the supplied content. Practical exposure reduction would require limiting access to VPN establishment to trusted users and reducing unnecessary IPsec/IKEv2 exposure, but authoritative vendor mitigation details are not available in the provided data.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the Cisco-provided fixed software release for Cisco Secure Firewall ASA Software or Cisco Secure Firewall FTD Software that addresses CVE-2026-20049. The provided content does not include exact fixed versions, so that information is currently not available from the supplied data.
