Stored Blind XSS in CI4MS backup management

IdentifiersCVE-2026-34563CWE-79· Improper Neutralization of Input…

CVE-2026-34563 is a stored blind cross-site scripting vulnerability in CI4MS, a CodeIgniter 4-based CMS skeleton. Versions prior to 0.31.0.0 improperly sanitize user-controlled input during backup uploads and backup metadata processing. An attacker can inject a malicious JavaScript payload into the backup filename via an uploaded xss.sql file, using SQL functionality to insert the payload server-side. The malicious value is subsequently rendered in multiple backup management views without proper output encoding, resulting in stored blind XSS.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the browser context of users who later access affected backup management views, including privileged administrative users. Because the payload is stored and triggered later, it can support session theft, CSRF-style actions, administrative action execution in the victim's context, data exposure available to the victim session, and broader compromise of the CMS administrative interface. The advisory indicates scope change and high confidentiality impact.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to backup upload and backup management functionality to only fully trusted users, disable or temporarily remove backup upload features where feasible, and review templates/views to apply context-appropriate output encoding for backup filenames and metadata. Monitor for suspicious uploaded backup files and stored script payloads in backup records, and clear malicious entries from stored backup metadata.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade CI4MS to version 0.31.0.0 or later, which patches the vulnerability. Ensure all backup-related user-controlled fields, including filenames and metadata derived from uploaded backup content, are validated and sanitized on input and safely encoded on output in every backup management view.
