Use-after-free in Google Chrome Extensions

IdentifiersCVE-2026-12445CWE-416

CVE-2026-12445 is a high-severity use-after-free vulnerability in the Extensions component of Google Chrome affecting versions prior to 149.0.7827.155. According to the provided content, the flaw can be triggered via a crafted malicious Chrome extension after an attacker convinces a user to install it. The vulnerability results in a dangling-pointer memory safety condition that can lead to heap corruption during extension handling. Specific vulnerable functions or code paths are not provided in the available source material.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can cause heap corruption in the browser process associated with Chrome Extensions. The provided advisories indicate this may lead to browser compromise and potentially arbitrary code execution in the context of the browser. Broader Chromium downstream advisories also associate this class of issue with denial of service and possible information disclosure depending on exploitability and chaining.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patched versions are fully deployed, prevent installation of untrusted or suspicious Chrome extensions. In enterprise environments, restrict extension installation using browser policy, allowlist only approved extensions, and limit users to trusted extension sources. Additional defense-in-depth measures such as endpoint protection and browser isolation may reduce risk, but no vendor-provided workaround is described beyond updating.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 149.0.7827.155 or later. For Chromium on Debian, upgrade to 149.0.7827.155-1~deb13u1 on Debian stable (trixie) or 149.0.7827.155-1~deb12u1 on Debian oldstable (bookworm). For Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based), upgrade to version 149.0.4022.80 or later, which incorporates the Chromium fix.
