Insufficient Overlay Window Protections in Android System UI

IdentifiersCVE-2018-9524CWE-281

CVE-2018-9524 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the System UI component of Android (versions 7.0, 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 8.0, and 8.1). The vulnerability arises from insufficient protections around overlay windows, allowing a local attacker to exploit overlay functionality to escalate privileges. Exploitation requires user interaction but does not require additional execution privileges.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a local attacker to escalate privileges on the affected Android device, potentially leading to unauthorized actions or access to sensitive functionality within the System UI context. The attack requires user interaction, such as tricking the user into interacting with a malicious overlay.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict the use of overlay windows by untrusted applications and educate users to be cautious of unexpected or suspicious overlays. Where possible, disable the ability for apps to draw overlays unless absolutely necessary.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the security updates provided by Google for the affected Android versions. Device manufacturers and users should ensure their devices are updated to the latest available security patch level that addresses this vulnerability (Android ID: A-34170870).
