Apple AirPlay local network app termination vulnerability

IdentifiersCVE-2025-24251CWE-20

CVE-2025-24251 is an Apple vulnerability in the AirPlay/local-network attack surface. Apple states that a local network attacker may cause unexpected app termination, and that the issue was addressed with improved checks. The flaw was fixed in macOS Sequoia 15.4, macOS Sonoma 14.7.5, macOS Ventura 13.7.5, iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, iPadOS 17.7.6, tvOS 18.4, watchOS 11.4, and visionOS 2.4. Publicly available information does not provide the specific vulnerable function, root cause, or a more precise technical mechanism beyond Apple’s statement that additional checks were added.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker on the same local network to trigger unexpected application termination, resulting in a denial-of-service condition against the affected app or service. Based on the available information, there is no public evidence that this CVE by itself provides code execution, privilege escalation, or data disclosure.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure to untrusted local networks and restrict or disable AirPlay-related functionality where operationally feasible. Limit device presence on shared Wi-Fi segments, apply network segmentation, and minimize discoverability/access from other hosts on the same network. These are compensating controls only; the primary fix is installing Apple’s updates.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Apple’s security updates that address CVE-2025-24251: macOS Sequoia 15.4, macOS Sonoma 14.7.5, macOS Ventura 13.7.5, iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, iPadOS 17.7.6, tvOS 18.4, watchOS 11.4, and visionOS 2.4, or later versions. Because the issue is in the AirPlay/local-network attack surface, organizations should prioritize patching devices that are exposed to untrusted or shared local networks.
