Buffer Overflow in Belkin N750 Router MiniHttpd login.cgi jump Parameter

IdentifiersCVE-2014-1635CWE-120

CVE-2014-1635 is a buffer overflow vulnerability in login.cgi in the MiniHttpd component of the Belkin N750 Router. Affected firmware versions prior to F9K1103_WW_1.10.17m improperly handle the jump parameter, allowing a remote attacker to supply an overly long string that overflows a buffer. The flaw can be triggered remotely through crafted requests to the CGI endpoint, and successful exploitation may result in arbitrary code execution on the device.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows remote arbitrary code execution on the vulnerable Belkin N750 router. An attacker may be able to run attacker-controlled code in the context of the affected service, which can lead to full compromise of the device, botnet enrollment, traffic interception or manipulation, configuration changes, persistence, and use of the router as a pivot point for further attacks against the local network.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, restrict access to the router's administrative and web management interfaces from untrusted networks, especially the public internet. Disable remote administration if not required, place management interfaces behind trusted network boundaries, use firewall rules or ACLs to limit access to authorized hosts only, and monitor for suspicious requests targeting login.cgi or containing unusually long jump parameter values. Replacing unsupported or unpatchable devices should also be considered.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade the Belkin N750 Router firmware to a fixed version, specifically F9K1103_WW_1.10.17m or later, as versions before this release are vulnerable. Verify the exact hardware and firmware version before applying updates, and ensure the device is running vendor-supported firmware after the upgrade.
