Out-of-Bounds Write RCE in Adobe Acrobat and Reader 3D PDF Parsing

IdentifiersCVE-2019-7118CWE-787· Out-of-bounds Write

CVE-2019-7118 is a critical out-of-bounds write vulnerability in Adobe Acrobat and Reader affecting versions 2019.010.20098 and earlier, 2017.011.30127 and earlier, and 2015.006.30482 and earlier. The issue is triggered while parsing embedded 3D PDF content handled through Adobe’s U3D support modules, with the vulnerable code path identified in the 2d.x3d component, specifically TRGB::Read(). The flaw occurs during processing of texture image data from crafted U3D content, where malformed size/structure values can cause writes past the intended buffer boundary. Public analysis indicates the crash occurs in the sandboxed process and can be reached via a malicious PDF containing crafted 3D content and texture resource declarations, including external image handling.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the current user. Available analysis indicates the memory corruption occurs in the sandboxed Adobe Reader process as the logged-on user, so direct impact may initially be constrained by the application sandbox, but it still provides a path to execute attacker-controlled code and may enable further post-exploitation depending on the environment and available sandbox escape techniques.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by disabling or restricting rendering of embedded 3D content in PDF documents where operationally feasible, especially in environments that exchange 3D PDFs. Limit opening of untrusted PDF files, use protected/sandboxed viewing modes, and enforce application control and least-privilege policies. Prioritize patching in CAD and similar workflows where 3D content may be enabled by default or commonly used.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Adobe’s patched releases referenced in APSB19-17. Fixed versions include Acrobat/Reader DC Continuous 2019.010.20099, Acrobat/Reader 2017 Classic 2017.011.30138, and Acrobat/Reader DC Classic 2015.006.30493 for Windows and macOS. Organizations should deploy vendor updates through standard enterprise software distribution mechanisms and verify that vulnerable legacy builds are removed from endpoints.
