Improper Access Control in Instructure Canvas LMS DocViewer

IdentifiersCVE-2021-36539CWE-862

CVE-2021-36539 is an improper access control vulnerability in Instructure Canvas LMS. The application failed to properly restrict access to locked or unpublished files when an unprivileged user accessed the DocViewer-based file preview URL (canvadoc_session_url). This allowed unauthorized users to preview files that should have been inaccessible due to their locked or unpublished status.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Unprivileged users could gain unauthorized access to sensitive or restricted files by leveraging the DocViewer file preview URL, potentially exposing confidential information or violating access policies.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

As a temporary mitigation, restrict or monitor access to DocViewer URLs and ensure that file permissions are strictly enforced at the application and network level until a patch is applied.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Update Canvas LMS to a version that properly enforces access controls on DocViewer file preview URLs, ensuring that locked or unpublished files cannot be accessed by unprivileged users.
