Sensitive Information Exposure via Insecure Network Transmission in iOS/iPadOS

IdentifiersCVE-2024-44276CWE-319· Cleartext Transmission of…

CVE-2024-44276 is a vulnerability in iOS and iPadOS where sensitive information could be transmitted over the network without the use of HTTPS. This allows a user in a privileged network position to potentially intercept and leak sensitive data. The issue was addressed by enforcing the use of HTTPS for network communications in iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

An attacker with a privileged network position (e.g., on the same Wi-Fi network or with access to network infrastructure) could intercept sensitive information transmitted in plaintext, leading to information disclosure.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until the device is updated, users should avoid connecting to untrusted or public networks and use VPNs to encrypt network traffic, reducing the risk of interception.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to iOS 18.2 or iPadOS 18.2, where the issue is resolved by enforcing HTTPS for network transmissions.
