ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could result in the disclosure of sensitive information from memory, which may be leveraged to further compromise the affected system or facilitate other attacks. The vulnerability does not directly allow code execution but can be used in conjunction with other vulnerabilities for more severe impact.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, restrict the opening of untrusted PDF files, disable JavaScript in Adobe Reader/Acrobat, and consider using application whitelisting or sandboxing to limit the impact of exploitation. Monitor for suspicious PDF activity and deploy endpoint protection solutions.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to Adobe Acrobat and Reader versions 2019.012.20034 (DC/Reader DC Continuous), 2017.011.30142 (Acrobat/Reader 2017), or 2015.006.30497 (DC/Reader DC Classic 2015), or later. Adobe has released security updates addressing this vulnerability.
