Sensitive data access via directory path parsing issue in macOS Admin Framework

IdentifiersCVE-2026-20669CWE-22· Improper Limitation of a Pathname…

CVE-2026-20669 is a directory-path parsing/validation vulnerability in Apple’s Admin Framework on macOS. Due to improper handling of directory paths, an application could leverage path parsing edge cases to bypass intended path restrictions. Apple addressed the issue by improving path validation. The issue is fixed in macOS Tahoe 26.3. (Credited by Apple to Mickey Jin.)

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

A malicious application may be able to access sensitive user data (unauthorized data access / information disclosure) by abusing the flawed directory path parsing/validation logic in Admin Framework.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrading is not possible: restrict execution/installation of untrusted applications (e.g., via MDM/allowlisting), enforce least privilege, and minimize granting broad data access entitlements/permissions (e.g., avoid unnecessary Full Disk Access / Files and Folders permissions) to reduce the likelihood and impact of an app abusing the path validation weakness.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade to macOS Tahoe 26.3 (or later), which includes the improved path validation fix for CVE-2026-20669.
