Silence, also tracked as GOLD WYMAN, is a financially motivated cybercrime threat actor known for targeting banks to steal funds. The group was publicly associated with campaigns active by 2017 and has been linked to intrusions against financial institutions in Russia, Armenia, and Malaysia. Its operations have been described as resembling historical Carbanak activity in their focus on bank fraud and operational surveillance of victim staff. Silence is known to use spearphishing to gain initial access by targeting specific bank employees. During intrusions, the group deployed the Silence trojan, malware used to monitor victim activity and gather operational knowledge needed to facilitate fraudulent transactions. Reported functionality included screen and video recording, enabling the attackers to observe banking workflows before executing theft. After collecting sufficient information from compromised personnel and systems, the group carried out large unauthorized transfers to steal money from victim banks. The actor's observed tradecraft supports a profile centered on financially driven intrusion, victim monitoring, and post-compromise fraud against the banking sector.
