Sharpshooter is a malware-associated intrusion set known for email-based delivery of malicious attachments and a multi-stage infection chain. It has used phishing or spearphishing emails to send weaponized document attachments, including DOC and PDF files, relying on user opening the attachment to initiate compromise. After execution, a first-stage downloader resolves Windows APIs dynamically, including functions associated with library loading, symbol resolution, and process creation, then retrieves additional payloads for follow-on execution. Reported activity includes installation of the Rising Sun malware for persistence via the Windows Startup folder. The observed tradecraft supports capabilities in initial access, user-execution-based delivery, payload staging, persistence, and post-compromise malware deployment.
Mallory correlates actor tradecraft and target patterns against your stack, your sector, and your geography. See overlap before they land.
