MalKamak is an Iranian state-aligned cyber-espionage threat actor active since at least 2018. It is responsible for Operation GhostShell, a highly targeted intelligence-collection campaign against aerospace and telecommunications organizations, primarily in the Middle East, with identified victims in the United States and Russia. Its objective is the theft of sensitive information concerning critical assets, organizational infrastructure, and technology. MalKamak uses the modular ShellClient remote-access trojan, which evolved from a basic reverse shell into a stealth-oriented espionage platform. ShellClient conducts host and security-product discovery, executes commands and interactive shells, manipulates files, supports self-update and self-removal, and exfiltrates collected data through cloud-storage-based command-and-control. The group establishes persistence and SYSTEM-level execution through malicious Windows services, uses obfuscation to hinder detection, and has performed lateral movement using Windows remote-management mechanisms and administrative tools. It has also collected Active Directory information, dumped credentials from process memory, and compressed stolen material before exfiltration. MalKamak has possible but unconfirmed tradecraft connections to Chafer (APT39) and Agrius; it is assessed as a distinct group.
