Calypso APT, also tracked as Red Lamassu, is a cyber espionage threat actor active since at least 2019 and assessed to operate from China, likely Sichuan Province. The group focuses on intelligence collection for long-term strategic advantage and has targeted critical telecommunications infrastructure and broader infrastructure networks in Asia. Reported targeting has centered on telecommunications providers in Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and India, indicating a sustained interest in regional communications hubs. The actor has used both Linux and Windows tooling, including a feature-rich Windows backdoor known as JFMBackdoor. This implant has been delivered via DLL side-loading and supports remote shell access, silent command execution, file system operations, network proxying, screenshot capture, and self-removal. These behaviors demonstrate mature post-compromise tradecraft oriented toward persistence, defense evasion, intelligence collection, and operational flexibility inside victim environments. Recent activity has been linked to the compromise of an Afghan telecommunications provider, reinforcing the group’s emphasis on telecom-sector espionage.
