HelloNet is an advanced threat campaign targeting organizations in Russia through abuse of the update mechanism associated with the ViPNet private networking product suite. Observed victims include government agencies and organizations in the energy, transport, education, and logistics sectors, particularly environments that rely on ViPNet in regulated or state-linked contexts. The operation has been active since at least May. Its tradecraft includes DLL sideloading via the ViPNet Update System, process injection into a trusted Windows service process, persistence, privilege escalation, and defense evasion through log clearing. Malware associated with the campaign includes HelloInjector, used to achieve sideloading and inject into a system process; HelloProxy, which functions as a proxy and loader; HelloExecutor, a backdoor component; HelloBackdoor, a Rust-based implant; and HelloCleaner, used to erase ViPNet log data. The campaign demonstrates post-compromise modular deployment, with follow-on payload retrieval from command-and-control infrastructure. The actor has been tentatively linked, with low confidence, to an unidentified Chinese-speaking APT group. That attribution remains unconfirmed. No high-confidence public attribution to a specific named state-backed cluster is established.
