KICKPLATE is a Nim-based Windows backdoor used by the financially motivated threat actor BREEZE COMET, formerly UNC5669. It masquerades as Windows Update Health Tools, modifies Windows startup settings and services to establish persistence, executes commands, and controls SOCKS5 tunneling components for proxying attacker traffic within compromised environments. BREEZE COMET employs KICKPLATE alongside LIGHTPAINT, MILDFROST, and BOATBEAM as redundant persistent access mechanisms during intrusions targeting Brazilian banks, payment processors, retailers, fintechs, and other organizations able to initiate transactions through Brazilian financial-payment infrastructure.
