LIGHTPAINT is a Java-based backdoor used by the financially motivated BREEZE COMET threat actor, also tracked as UNC5669. It installs and configures the legitimate SoftEther VPN to provide persistent remote access, automates persistence, and clears logs to reduce forensic visibility. BREEZE COMET has used LIGHTPAINT alongside other custom backdoors while targeting Brazilian banks, payment processors, retailers, fintech firms, and other organizations with access to payment infrastructure and banking applications, including Pix, STR, and Boleto systems.
