Researchers have identified a large-scale, decentralized phishing campaign known as Smishing Triad, which leverages SMS messages to impersonate services across critical sectors including banking, e-commerce, healthcare, law enforcement, and social media. The operation, managed in Chinese and supported by a network of thousands of malicious actors, has registered nearly 195,000 domains since January 2024, primarily through a Hong Kong-based registrar and using Chinese DNS infrastructure, but with most attack domains hosted on U.S.-based cloud services. The campaign targets victims globally, with a notable focus on U.S. residents, and uses sophisticated social engineering tactics to collect sensitive information such as national identification numbers, home addresses, financial details, and credentials.
The Smishing Triad campaign is highly decentralized, involving a range of specialists including data brokers, domain sellers, phishing kit developers, and spammers who deliver lures via mobile messaging apps. The group’s infrastructure and phishing kits are also used by other threat actors, further expanding its reach. The campaign’s scale, complexity, and use of phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) models make it a significant and evolving threat, with attackers continuously adapting their tactics and expanding the range of impersonated services to maximize the effectiveness of their phishing operations.

On 2026-04-29, Group-IB reported that Reward Points and Failed Parcel Delivery smishing campaigns observed since January 2025 were tied to a common phishing-as-a-service platform called the Phoenix System. The report said the platform used more than 2,500 phishing domains against over 70 organizations globally, offered centralized campaign management and OTP interception features, and appeared to be the successor to the older Mouse System.
On 2026-04-27, researchers reported that Chinese-language smishing/PhaaS operators were scaling credential-theft campaigns beyond SMS to over-the-top messaging channels including Apple iMessage and RCS. The findings also highlighted SIM box infrastructure as a key enabler for sending large volumes of fraudulent messages from ordinary-looking mobile numbers across countries such as the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Japan.
On 2026-03-02, Breakglass Intelligence reported that Smishing Triad was still operating at scale and had evolved to use a new Javalin/Kotlin-based phishing kit hosted on Alibaba Cloud with server-side Telegram exfiltration. The researchers also said developer Wang Duo Yu embedded a backdoor that stole operators’ Telegram bot tokens via a Windows-based collection server, exposing stolen victim data across deployments.
On October 23, 2025, Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 published research describing Smishing Triad as a large-scale Chinese-managed phishing-as-a-service ecosystem using rapid domain churn, Hong Kong-based registration, China-based DNS, and mostly U.S.-hosted infrastructure. The report said the operation impersonates postal services, toll agencies, tax authorities, and other brands to harvest personal and financial data globally.
Fortra observed Smishing Triad phishing kits increasingly targeting brokerage accounts, with attacks rising fivefold in Q2 2025 compared with the prior year. The activity was linked to account takeover and potential stock-manipulation schemes such as ramp-and-dump tactics.
Since June 2025, Unit 42 observed tens of thousands of newly registered domains with more "gov"-prefixed naming and increased impersonation of the IRS and U.S. state tax agencies. This marked a shift beyond the group's well-known toll road and parcel delivery lures.
SpyCloud Labs and the urlscan Research Team said the Chinese-language YYlaiyu phishing-as-a-service panel had been observed since at least September 2024 within a broader smishing-driven financial fraud ecosystem targeting Western users. The panel reportedly offered more than 90 phishing templates, Alibaba-integrated domain registration, operator controls, and APIs for exporting stolen data and managing phishing pages.
Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 said it tracked the China-linked, decentralized smishing ecosystem known as Smishing Triad from January 2024 onward. Since that point, researchers linked roughly 194,000 to 195,000 malicious domains to the operation.
