Wireshark disclosed a denial-of-service vulnerability in its BUSMASTER file parser that can cause the application to terminate when a user opens or reads a specially malformed packet capture file. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-76926 and wnpa-sec-2026-70, affects Wireshark 4.6.0 through 4.6.7 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.17, as well as TShark and software embedding libwiretap during automatic format detection.
The bug was traced to the BUSMASTER scanner's handling of an unfinished header or time statement containing a newline, which triggered Flex's fatal error path and caused the host process to call exit(2) instead of returning a normal parse error. Researchers showed that even minimal malformed input could crash the parser, and Wireshark fixed the issue by returning WTAP_ERR_BAD_FILE with a diagnostic message rather than terminating the process; the remediation is available in Wireshark 4.6.8 and 4.4.18, and the vendor said it was not aware of exploitation in the wild.
