Threat researchers identified three criminal ecosystems hiding behind visually similar casino and adult websites: Chinese-language illegal gambling and money-laundering operations, fraudulent “scambling” platforms, and decoy sites hosting PeckBirdy malware command-and-control (C2) infrastructure. The Chinese-language gambling ecosystem spans more than 1.7 million domains and includes the FUNNULL CDN, Vigorish Viper, and Sable Squirrel networks; Sable Squirrel alone reportedly controls roughly 10,000 drop-caught expired domains, has spent more than $7 million acquiring them, and has been linked to 405 C2 domains and more than 31,000 malware samples communicating with its infrastructure. China-aligned actors have used PeckBirdy since 2023, embedding JavaScript and WebSocket C2 services in low-quality casino and adult sites, including cache-cdn[.]org, cache-mcp[.]com, mcp-source[.]online, and githubassets[.]net.
Separate scam-gambling networks use polished gaming and wagering sites promoted through Discord and social media, often advertising fraudulent $2,500 celebrity-linked credits. Victims can place simulated bets and see fabricated winnings, but withdrawals trigger demands for cryptocurrency “verification deposits” and further payments that never result in a payout. Researchers linked at least 1,270 recently registered domains to one centrally managed operation through shared code, tracking, support infrastructure, and chatbot credentials; affiliates have also expanded this scalable scam model. Organizations should treat casino or adult-domain DNS activity as a potential security signal rather than solely a policy issue, especially where endpoints resolve multiple distinct PeckBirdy-related domains.

As of August 31, cache-cdn[.]org had 13 VirusTotal detections, cache-mcp[.]com had three, and mcp-source[.]online had none. The domains were associated with PeckBirdy JavaScript and WebSocket C2 infrastructure hidden behind casino and adult-site decoys.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime assessed that illegal online gambling had become a primary revenue source and operational enabler for organized crime in Southeast Asia, estimating global illegal betting revenue at up to $1.7 trillion annually.
Brian Krebs documented a cryptocurrency scam network using more than 1,200 polished gaming and wagering websites promoted through Discord and social media. The sites used a shared chatbot API key and lured victims with fake promotional credits before demanding nonrefundable cryptocurrency deposits for withdrawals.
The Philippines blocked more than 7,000 illegal gambling websites, though operators rapidly rotated domains and limited the measure's effectiveness.
China-aligned APT actors began using the PeckBirdy framework to conceal malware command-and-control infrastructure in Chinese-language casino decoy websites. The framework has targeted corporate and government organizations across Asia.
China's March 2021 criminal-law amendment prohibited operating overseas gambling establishments and organizing or soliciting Chinese residents to use them.
Infoblox identified Sable Squirrel as a large expired-domain acquisition campaign reportedly controlling about 10,000 domains and spending more than $7 million acquiring them. Researchers confirmed 405 of its domains as malware C2 infrastructure and found more than 31,000 malware samples communicating with its infrastructure.
Infoblox distinguished illegal Chinese-language gambling and money-laundering sites, fraudulent "scambling" platforms, and casino or adult-site decoys concealing PeckBirdy C2 infrastructure. Its tracked Chinese-language casino ecosystem contained more than 1.7 million domains, with FUNNULL CDN and Vigorish Viper accounting for about 81% of them.
