Unauthenticated OS Command Injection in TerraMaster TOS makecvs.php

IdentifiersCVE-2020-28188CWE-78· Improper Neutralization of Special…

CVE-2020-28188 is a remote command execution vulnerability in TerraMaster TOS versions up to and including 4.2.06. According to the provided content, the flaw exists in /include/makecvs.php, where the Event parameter is not properly sanitized before being used in a context that allows OS command injection. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can supply crafted input to the Event parameter and cause arbitrary operating system commands to be executed on the target device.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows remote unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary OS commands on the affected TerraMaster NAS device. This can result in full compromise of the appliance, including unauthorized access to stored data, modification or deletion of files, deployment of malware or ransomware, persistence, and use of the device as a foothold for further activity within the network.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, restrict or disable external access to the TerraMaster management interface, especially any exposure of the vulnerable PHP endpoint. Place the device behind a VPN or trusted management network, enforce network ACLs to limit access to administrative interfaces, and monitor web logs and process activity for suspicious requests targeting /include/makecvs.php or anomalous command execution. Where feasible, use reverse-proxy or WAF rules to block requests containing shell metacharacters or suspicious Event parameter values, though this is only a temporary risk-reduction measure.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade TerraMaster TOS to a version newer than 4.2.06 that addresses CVE-2020-28188. Because the issue is caused by improper handling of user-controlled input in /include/makecvs.php, remediation requires applying the vendor fix that correctly validates or neutralizes the Event parameter before it reaches OS command execution contexts.
