CVE-2023-41064 is a buffer overflow in Apple’s ImageIO/Image I/O image-processing component. According to Apple, processing a maliciously crafted image can trigger the flaw and lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple states the issue was addressed through improved memory handling. The vulnerability affected supported Apple platforms prior to the fixes in iOS 16.6.1 and iPadOS 16.6.1, iOS 15.7.9 and iPadOS 15.7.9, macOS Ventura 13.5.2, macOS Monterey 12.6.9, and macOS Big Sur 11.7.10. Apple reported that it was aware of in-the-wild exploitation. Supporting context ties the issue to the BLASTPASS exploit chain, in which malicious PassKit attachments containing crafted images were reportedly delivered via iMessage to achieve zero-click compromise on fully patched iPhones running iOS 16.6.

Successful exploitation can result in arbitrary code execution in the context of the vulnerable image-processing path. In observed real-world use, the flaw was reportedly used as part of the BLASTPASS zero-click exploit chain to compromise Apple devices and deliver NSO Group Pegasus spyware. Because Apple stated the issue may have been actively exploited, the practical impact includes device compromise without user interaction in at least some attack chains, enabling follow-on spyware deployment and broader post-exploitation activity.

Mitigation

If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure to untrusted image content and attachment-processing paths, especially through messaging workflows. For users at elevated risk, supporting context indicates Citizen Lab and Apple’s Security Engineering and Architecture team believed Lockdown Mode blocked the BLASTPASS attack chain associated with this vulnerability. General interim measures include restricting delivery of untrusted attachments/images, minimizing attack surface in messaging applications where feasible, and heightened monitoring of high-risk devices until patches are deployed.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Apple’s security updates that fix CVE-2023-41064: iOS 16.6.1 and iPadOS 16.6.1; iOS 15.7.9 and iPadOS 15.7.9 for older supported devices; macOS Ventura 13.5.2; macOS Monterey 12.6.9; and macOS Big Sur 11.7.10. Organizations should prioritize patching internet-connected and high-risk user devices immediately given Apple’s statement that the vulnerability may have been exploited in the wild.
