Authenticated denial of service in AVEVA PI Data Archive subsystems

IdentifiersCVE-2025-36539CWE-248· Uncaught Exception

CVE-2025-36539 is an uncaught exception vulnerability affecting AVEVA PI Data Archive components used with Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk Historian Site Edition, including FactoryTalk Historian SE versions 11.00 and earlier. The flaw allows an authenticated user to trigger an unhandled exception that can shut down necessary PI Data Archive subsystems. The issue is described as residing in AVEVA PI Data Archive products and results in instability or crash conditions within required historian subsystems rather than direct code execution.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can cause denial of service by shutting down necessary PI Data Archive subsystems. The supporting content also indicates that, depending on the timing of the crash, data present in snapshots or the write cache may be lost. This can interrupt historian availability and impair collection or retention of process data.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrading is not possible, restrict access to PI Data Archive services, specifically limiting exposure of PI Data Archive port 5450 to trusted hosts and networks only. Apply standard ICS hardening measures noted in the advisory context: minimize network exposure, ensure the system is not internet-accessible, segment control networks from business networks, place affected systems behind firewalls, use secure remote access such as updated VPNs, and monitor PI Data Archive subsystems for unexpected restarts or shutdowns.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Rockwell Automation states that the FactoryTalk Historian vulnerabilities, including CVE-2025-36539, were fixed in FactoryTalk Historian Site Edition version 12.00.00. Upgrade affected deployments from version 11.00 and earlier to version 12.00.00 or later.
