Authenticated DoS in AVEVA PI Data Archive / FactoryTalk Historian SE

IdentifiersCVE-2025-44019CWE-248· Uncaught Exception

CVE-2025-44019 is an uncaught-exception vulnerability in AVEVA PI Data Archive components used by Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk Historian Site Edition. The issue affects FactoryTalk Historian SE versions 11.00 and earlier. If exploited, an authenticated user can trigger a crash that shuts down necessary PI Data Archive subsystems. The resulting failure condition causes a denial of service, and depending on crash timing, data resident in snapshots or the write cache may be lost.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated attacker to terminate required PI Data Archive subsystems, causing denial of service for the affected historian/data archive environment. In addition to service interruption, the advisory notes a risk of data loss if the crash occurs while data is present in snapshots or the write cache.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate upgrading is not possible, restrict access to PI Data Archive services, including port 5450, to trusted hosts only; minimize network exposure; ensure the system is not internet-accessible; segment control-system networks behind firewalls and isolate them from business networks; use secure remote access methods such as updated VPNs; and monitor PI Data Archive-related subsystems for unexpected restarts or crashes.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Rockwell Automation fixed the FactoryTalk Historian vulnerabilities covered by advisory SD1773 in FactoryTalk Historian Site Edition version 12.00.00. Upgrade affected FactoryTalk Historian SE deployments from version 11.00 and earlier to version 12.00.00 or later.
