Authenticated buffer overflow in QNAP License Center 2.0.x

IdentifiersCVE-2025-53597CWE-120

CVE-2025-53597 is a buffer overflow vulnerability in QNAP License Center (2.0.x) on QNAP NAS devices. An attacker who has obtained an administrator account can trigger the overflow to corrupt process memory, which may result in process crashes (denial of service) and potential memory modification. QNAP fixed the issue in License Center 2.0.36 and later.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

A successful exploit can lead to License Center process instability and crashes (denial of service) and may allow modification/corruption of memory within the affected process. The issue is not described as enabling unauthenticated remote exploitation; exploitation is contingent on prior account compromise (administrator).

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by limiting access to the NAS management interfaces/License Center to trusted networks, hardening and monitoring administrator accounts (strong passwords, MFA where available), and minimizing the number of users with administrative privileges to reduce the likelihood of credential-based exploitation.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade QNAP License Center to version 2.0.36 or later (via the QTS/QuTS hero management interface), which contains the vendor fix for CVE-2025-53597.
