Authentication Bypass in QNAP QHora-322 qvpn_db_mgr role_type Handling

IdentifiersCVE-2025-62845CWE-150· Improper Neutralization of Escape,…

CVE-2025-62845 is an improper neutralization of escape, meta, or control sequences vulnerability affecting QNAP QHora devices, including QHora-322, in the qvpn_db_mgr endpoint. The flaw is specifically associated with handling of the role_type parameter. According to the provided context, a remote attacker can abuse this input-handling weakness to bypass authentication, including QBelt VPN authentication, on affected routers. The issue was disclosed in connection with Pwn2Own and is tracked by ZDI as ZDI-26-240 / ZDI-CAN-28423. QNAP states the issue is fixed in QuRouter 2.6.3.009 and later.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to bypass authentication on affected QNAP QHora-322 routers. This can undermine access controls protecting the qvpn_db_mgr functionality and QBelt VPN authentication path. The provided context indicates confidentiality, integrity, and availability can each be impacted at a limited level, consistent with the cited CVSS vector, and the vulnerability can also cause unexpected system behavior.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

If immediate patching is not possible, restrict network exposure to the affected management and VPN-related interfaces, especially the qvpn_db_mgr endpoint, to trusted administrative networks only. Minimize or disable unnecessary remote access paths, enforce strong administrative credential hygiene, and monitor for anomalous authentication activity involving QBelt VPN or requests referencing the role_type parameter. Because the flaw affects authentication handling, reducing reachable attack surface is the primary interim control.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade affected QNAP QHora systems to QuRouter 2.6.3.009 or later. QNAP indicates this version contains the vendor fix for CVE-2025-62845. Review and apply the corresponding QNAP security advisory, identified in the provided context as QSA-26-12, and verify that all exposed QHora-322 devices are running the patched firmware.
