CVE-2001-0552 is a remote command injection vulnerability in the ovactiond SNMP trap and event handler component of HP OpenView Network Node Manager (NNM) 6.1 and Tivoli NetView 5.x and 6.x. The flaw is triggered when ovactiond processes a crafted SNMP trap message containing shell metacharacters, which are improperly incorporated into command execution. Because user-supplied trap content is not safely neutralized before being passed to the shell, a remote attacker can cause ovactiond to execute arbitrary commands. Available reporting indicates the commands run with the privileges of the ovactiond process, typically the bin account on Unix systems and SYSTEM on Windows NT/2000 systems.
