CVE-2004-0184 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in tcpdump 3.8.1 and earlier in the ISAKMP packet dissection logic, specifically the isakmp_id_print routine. A malformed ISAKMP Identification payload can trigger an integer underflow during length handling after byte-order conversion, causing the computed payload length to become less than 8 and leading the decoder to read beyond the intended buffer bounds. Because tcpdump processes attacker-controlled network traffic, a remote attacker can supply a crafted ISAKMP packet that causes the parser to access invalid memory and terminate unexpectedly.
