CVE-2004-0549 is a cross-domain security context validation flaw in the Internet Explorer 6 WebBrowser ActiveX control / MSHTML rendering engine. Internet Explorer incorrectly determines the security zone of a browser frame that is opened in one domain and then redirected by a web server to a different domain. The issue can be triggered via the showModalDialog method together with location changes, including delayed HTTP redirect behavior or an HTTP response containing a Location header with a "URL:"-prefixed ms-its URI, and also by modifying the window location attribute. By confusing IE about the effective origin/security zone of the redirected content, attacker-controlled script can execute in a more trusted context, including the Local Machine Zone. The vulnerability was notably exploited by Download.Ject/Scob/Toofer using ADODB.Stream to retrieve and run malicious code. Any application embedding the WebBrowser ActiveX control or using MSHTML, including products such as Outlook and Outlook Express, may also be affected.
