CVE-2008-3431 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the VBoxDrv.sys kernel driver shipped with Sun xVM VirtualBox before version 1.6.4. The flaw is in the VBoxDrvNtDeviceControl function, which uses the METHOD_NEITHER communication method for IOCTL handling and fails to properly validate a buffer associated with the IRP object. Because user-supplied data is passed into kernel context without adequate checking, a local user who can open the VirtualBox device can invoke DeviceIoControl with crafted input containing a kernel address to be overwritten. This creates an arbitrary kernel memory write condition that can be leveraged to execute code in kernel context or otherwise elevate privileges.

A vulnerability in a VirtualBox driver mentioned only as an example of another vulnerable driver with similar arbitrary kernel read/write abuse potential.
A VirtualBox driver vulnerability used by the MagicScroll (AcidBox) malware framework as a kernel-mode escalation/loading mechanism for a later-stage payload.
A VirtualBox Windows host driver (VBoxDrv.sys) kernel vulnerability allowing an unprivileged caller to pass a kernel pointer via DeviceIoControl and trigger an arbitrary kernel memory overwrite, enabling local privilege escalation / kernel compromise and (as used by Turla/AcidBox) disabling Windows Driver Signature Enforcement to load unsigned drivers.
