CVE-2011-1992 is an information disclosure vulnerability in the XSS Filter implementation of Microsoft Internet Explorer 8. The flaw allows a remote attacker to infer and read content belonging to a different origin or security zone by abusing the browser’s XSS filtering behavior as a side channel. Available reporting describes the attack as a trial-and-error technique in which crafted requests are used to trigger the filter conditionally, and the attacker observes whether filtering occurred. Additional analysis associates the issue with timing differences introduced by the filter’s pattern-matching logic, enabling incremental disclosure of protected content without direct same-origin access.
