CVE-2014-4681 is a denial-of-service vulnerability affecting the Wing HTTP server component in Wing FTP Server 4.3.7 and earlier on Windows. The flaw is caused by improper filtering of requests for certain reserved or special file names. By requesting one of these names, a remote attacker can trigger a condition that causes the embedded web server to become unavailable.

Successful exploitation allows a remote attacker to cause denial of service against the Wing HTTP server component. This can disrupt access to the web interface or HTTP-based functionality exposed by the product, reducing availability for legitimate users.

If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure of the Wing HTTP server by restricting network access to trusted hosts, disabling unnecessary HTTP-facing functionality, and placing the service behind filtering controls that can block malformed or suspicious requests targeting special file names. Monitoring for repeated anomalous requests to the web server may also help detect exploitation attempts.

Upgrade Wing FTP Server to version 4.3.8 or later, which was identified as the vendor-fixed release for this issue. Validate the update in the target environment because independent verification of the fix was noted as not confirmed.
