CVE-2014-8361 is a remote code execution vulnerability in the miniigd SOAP service included in the Realtek SDK and inherited by multiple embedded and IoT devices that ship the vulnerable daemon. The flaw is exposed through the UPnP Internet Gateway Device SOAP interface and can be triggered by sending a crafted NewInternalClient value in a SOAP request. The vulnerable request handling permits OS command injection, allowing attacker-supplied shell metacharacters or commands to be interpreted by the underlying system rather than treated as data. Successful exploitation results in arbitrary command execution on the target device and has been widely incorporated into Mirai- and Gafgyt-derived botnet propagation chains. The vulnerability has been reported as exploited in the wild through 2023.
