CVE-2015-0057 is a local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in the Windows kernel-mode driver win32k.sys, affecting multiple Windows client and server versions including Windows Server 2003 SP2, Vista SP2, Server 2008 SP2/R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8/8.1, Server 2012/2012 R2, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Microsoft describes the issue as improper handling of objects in memory by Win32k.sys. Supporting technical analysis further characterizes it as a use-after-free condition in the Win32K User Mode Callback mechanism. Exploitation involves triggering the vulnerable callback/state path so that freed desktop-heap objects such as tagPROPLIST can be reused in a controlled way, enabling corruption of object fields and subsequent relative heap memory access that can be transformed into arbitrary kernel memory read/write.
