CVE-2015-5287 is a privilege escalation vulnerability in the abrt-hook-ccpp component of the Automatic Bug Reporting Tool (ABRT) on Red Hat-based Linux distributions. The vulnerability arises because abrt-hook-ccpp does not use the O_NOFOLLOW flag when creating coredump files, allowing a local attacker to exploit a race condition by creating a symbolic link (symlink) with a predictable filename (e.g., /var/tmp/abrt/abrt-hax-coredump or /var/spool/abrt/abrt-hax-coredump). If the attacker can control the symlink, they can cause abrt-hook-ccpp to write to arbitrary files as the abrt user or, in some cases, as root, leading to privilege escalation.
