CVE-2016-2109 is an improper-input-validation vulnerability in OpenSSL's ASN.1 BIO decoding implementation, specifically asn1_d2i_read_bio. When ASN.1 data is decoded from a BIO by d2i BIO functions such as d2i_CMS_bio(), a short malformed ASN.1 encoding can cause OpenSSL to request excessively large memory allocations. The issue affects OpenSSL releases before 1.0.1t and 1.0.2 releases before 1.0.2h. Memory-based ASN.1 decoding functions, including d2i_X509(), are not affected.
