CVE-2016-2124 is a vulnerability in Samba's implementation of SMB1 authentication. Due to a flaw in the protocol handling, an attacker can intercept and retrieve plaintext passwords transmitted over the network, even in environments where Kerberos authentication is required. This occurs because Samba may fall back to sending credentials in plaintext under certain conditions, exposing sensitive authentication data to network attackers.
