CVE-2016-3298 is an information disclosure vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 9 through 11 and the Internet Messaging API (inetres.dll and inetcomm.dll) on Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 SP1. The vulnerability allows remote attackers to determine the existence of arbitrary files on the target system by enticing a user to visit a specially crafted website. This can be used to probe for the presence of files such as security tools or sandbox indicators, aiding in further targeted attacks or evasion of detection.
