CVE-2016-6277 is a remote command injection vulnerability affecting multiple NETGEAR router models, including R6250, R6400, R6700, R6900, R7000, R7100LG, R7300DST, R7900, R8000, D6220, D6400, and D7000, as well as possibly additional devices in the same product family. The flaw is caused by improper neutralization of shell metacharacters in path information supplied to the router's cgi-bin interface. By embedding shell metacharacters in the path info sent to cgi-bin, a remote attacker can cause the device to execute arbitrary commands in the underlying operating system context. The vulnerability is remotely reachable over the management interface and has been widely incorporated into botnet propagation tooling targeting Internet-exposed routers.
