CVE-2016-9838 is a vulnerability in Joomla! before version 3.6.5, specifically in the components/com_users/models/registration.php file. The vulnerability arises from improper filtering of registration form data that is stored in the session when a validation error occurs. This flaw allows an attacker to submit a specially crafted registration form targeting the registration.register task, enabling them to gain access to an existing registered user's account and reset the user's group mappings, username, and password.
