CVE-2017-0261 is a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Office 2010 SP2, Office 2013 SP1, and Office 2016 involving the handling of embedded Encapsulated PostScript content. The flaw is a use-after-free condition in EPS processing associated with the PostScript restore operand. Exploitation abuses PostScript save/restore behavior together with forall to free an object and subsequently reuse it, creating a controllable read/write primitive. Observed exploit chains used this primitive to construct a ROP chain, forge a file object, and pivot execution through a PostScript file-handling operation to run attacker-controlled shellcode during document rendering. The vulnerable EPS content is processed through the Office EPS rendering path, enabling code execution when a malicious Office document is opened or otherwise rendered.
