CVE-2017-0263 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Win32k kernel subsystem of Microsoft Windows, affecting multiple Windows client and server releases including Windows 7 SP1 through Windows 10 and corresponding server versions. Available technical reporting identifies the flaw as a use-after-free condition in win32k, specifically involving window object destruction in the xxxDestroyWindow code path. Exploitation uses a crafted local application to trigger the stale object condition and corrupt kernel-managed window structures. Public analyses of in-the-wild exploitation describe use of the User32 HMValidateHandle technique to leak kernel addresses associated with window objects, followed by manipulation of window-related state to achieve controlled kernel memory access. Observed exploit chains used the vulnerability after initial code execution from a document exploit in order to escape the FLTLDR.EXE sandbox and elevate the attacker-controlled process. The vulnerability was exploited as a zero-day by APT28/Sednit/Sofacy in 2017.
