CVE-2017-12237 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in the Internet Key Exchange Version 2 (IKEv2) module of Cisco IOS 15.0 through 15.6 and Cisco IOS XE 3.5 through 16.5. The flaw is caused by improper processing of certain IKEv2 packets by affected devices. An unauthenticated remote attacker can trigger the issue by sending crafted IKEv2 traffic to a vulnerable device. Successful exploitation can drive sustained high CPU utilization, generate traceback conditions, or force a device reload, resulting in loss of availability. The issue affects devices with ISAKMP enabled, even if no IKEv2-specific features are explicitly configured, because multiple VPN-related capabilities rely on IKEv2 handling.
