Remote Code Execution in Google Chrome V8 complex species handling

IdentifiersCVE-2017-5030CWE-20

CVE-2017-5030 is a remote code execution vulnerability in the V8 JavaScript engine in Google Chrome caused by incorrect handling of complex species. According to the provided content, affected versions are Chrome prior to 57.0.2987.98 on Linux, Windows, and macOS, and prior to 57.0.2987.108 on Android. A remote attacker can trigger the flaw by convincing a victim to load a crafted HTML page, leading to arbitrary code execution in the browser context. The content specifically identifies the bug as residing in V8’s handling of complex species, but does not provide the exact vulnerable function or code path.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows remote arbitrary code execution via a crafted web page. In practical terms, this enables compromise of the targeted Chrome process when a victim visits attacker-controlled content. In the supplied reporting, this vulnerability was incorporated into the MOONSHINE exploit framework for Android-targeted operations, where browser exploitation was used as an initial access vector to deliver surveillance malware.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Apply vendor patches promptly and restrict exposure to attacker-controlled web content delivered through messaging applications or embedded browser views. Where possible, disable or limit use of outdated Chromium-based embedded webviews, enforce rapid browser updates, and use application control or mobile device management to prevent downgrade or replacement of browser components. User-targeted social engineering via chat platforms was a key delivery mechanism in the observed campaigns, so link filtering and high-risk user protections are also relevant.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 57.0.2987.98 or later on Linux, Windows, and macOS, and to 57.0.2987.108 or later on Android. More generally, ensure Chromium-based browsers and embedded browser components are updated to vendor-patched releases, since the exploit framework described in the content selected exploits based on browser version.
